Over the past few decades, common multiple ablative and nonablative modalities for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation have included lasers, chemical peels, light-based energy, radiofrequency, and dermabrasion. Each has its own unique properties, as well as advantages and disadvantages.

One of the newest technological advances in this arena is the development of plasma energy to alter skin surface and architecture. As a technology, plasma energy may bridge the gap between ablative and nonablative energies.

Plexr is a cordless micro-surgical hand operated device that transfers concentrated heat to the treated skin tissues. It uses the difference in voltage between the device and the patient’s skin. The difference in voltage generates a small electrical arc, similar to a minute lighting. The small lighting causes the sublimation of the fluids contained in superficial part of the skin, without unwanted heat transmission to the adjacent tissues. Additionally it acts on the superficial layer of the skin preserving the lower layers; this will reduce drastically any potential permanent skin damage that could be caused by the misuse of conventional lasers

What is the difference between Plexr and Electrosurgical devices?

Electrosurgical unit and Plexr have different intended use. Plexr is not intended to cut the tissue, but to generate retraction and perform gentle skin legion removals sublimating layer by layer of the skin. Plexr is non aggressive and does not create scars as we often see with electrosurgery but actually renews the tissue, because the parameters and the modality to generate the ark are different. Electrosurgical units / Radio scalpels use higher power and frequency and need the returning pad electrode to make charges flowing out from the body. Plexr with its lower power and frequency of the voltage, doesn’t need the returning pad and the action can be definitely considered Plasma, because a gas ionized by a difference in voltage is plasma. It is important to distinguish the name of the technology to not create confusion with the collateral effect generated by an electrosurgical unit. Other medical device work with undirect plasma. They first ionize the gas (Nitrogen, helium) and the blow the gas on the skin target with a biochemical action.
